Family traditions

In every family there are different traditions. Family traditions help people to feel themselves part of the whole, strengthen the family unity and simply to enjoy happy memories. I think that the moments spent in the circle of your family are the most precious.
We have a great tradition in our family. On May Day we usually go to the country where my grandparents live and spend there our days off. I often help my grandma with gardening or go fishing with my granddad. We love to make up picnics. My father usually cooks Russian fish soup and grilled vegetables. We often sit up late at night and look through our family albums. I can sit for hours studying each image and recalling life events. It is so touching. If it is summer, on weekends we go to the river to sunbathe and swim. We play beach volleyball or badminton. To tell the truth, I like to "unite" with the nature. As for me, I can spend hours staring at the water. At night we often build a fire and sing to a guitar. At these moments I feel the happiest person in the world.
Another family tradition is decorating our New Year tree with ornaments, tinsel and candles. As I am fond of handicrafts, I usually make scrapbooks of our celebrations. My mother usually makes New Year"s tree decorations and it definitely adds a special festive touch to the New Year decor. Besides, we usually celebrate New Year at home, in the circle of our family. I get up early in the morning and help my mom to cook a festive supper. It is a tradition in our country to have a certain menu for this holiday. Usually it is a baked goose, a famous Russian salad called Olivier, jellied minced meat and, of course, champagne. Then I go into my room to put my gala dress on. Sometimes my mom asks me to help her lay the table. When all preparations are behind, we watch TV and wait for our guests to come. When the Kremlin chimes strike twelve times, all of us make wishes, hold glasses of champagne and wish each other Happy New Year. Children usually receive long-awaited presents from Grandfather Frost and Snow Maiden. Besides, New Year fireworks are must-have for this holiday.
Frankly speaking, I love all holidays but my birthday is my favorite one. My parents usually wake me up early in the morning with a nice song "Happy birthday, dear Sophia" and give me their presents and flowers. We always invite guests to our place and make fun. We sing songs, dance and play games. Then, suddenly, all the light goes out and my parents bring a very nice cake with burning candles. I make my wish and blow out all candles. In the end of the party all of us come outside and set off fireworks.

I am Ildar Kirillov. Ildar is my first name and Kirillov is my last name. I am sixteen years old. I want to tell you something about my family. It is not big family — only five people. I have a father, mother, sister, and grandmother.

First of all, a few words about my parents. My father is forty five. He is an engineer. He likes singing and when we have free time at home I play the guitar and we sing together. When my father was a little boy he used to take things into pieces. My grandmother told me a story that once he tried to mend their microwave oven but he could not. I have a big lovely family. Well, let me introduce myself to you. My name is Alina. I am 12 years old. Besides me, there are two more children in our family. My older brother’s name is Igor; my younger sister’s name is Lena.

Igor is twenty-four. He works as an engineer for a small company. He graduated from university two years ago. It is very good to have an elder brother. As a rule, he helps Lena and me to do our homework. Lena is ten years old. She says her dream is to become a doctor in the future. However, nobody knows that I like this idea.

Also, we have a big pet. It is a dog. We like to look after it. Its name is Mushket and it is my favourite one. I like playing and having fun with my favourite pet. Sometimes, I have to play with my sister too. But, unfortunately, she is too small to share secrets with.

My parents are not strict. My Daddy is over fifty and he works as a driver. He is a very kind man. My Mummy is nearly fifty. I am proud of the fact that she works in the local library. She has been a librarian for a lot of years. My mum knows plenty of interesting stories.

As well as me, my mother has parents. It means I have grandparents. My grandfather and grandmother used to work at school as teachers. Now, they are retired and live in a village. They have a kitchen garden and they enjoy growing things. In summer my grandparents spend all their time in the garden harvesting vegetables.

My sister and I like swimming, so on Saturdays we usually go to swimming pool. At weekends my family always goes shopping. We usually buy food and some nice toys for Lena and me. On Sundays we all usually cook together in the kitchen. In the evening we get together at the table to have nice dinner. I love my family!

I have a family: a father, mother, and brother. I love them a lot. My father is fifty three and he is an English teacher. He loves his job and he is really into teaching English.

My mother is forty six. She is a beautiful lady with huge green eyes. She is a landscape designer. My mom has clever fingers and she makes wonderful things at her work. She loves her job as well.

My Family.

Our family is neither large nor small. I have a mother, a father and a sister. We all live together in a three-room flat in one of the industrial districts of Kharkiv. We are an average family.
My father Ihor Ivanovych is 45 years old. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes. He works as a manager at a big plant. He likes his work and spends most of his time there. By character my father is a quiet man, while my mother is energetic and talkative.
My mother’s name is Olha Petrivna. She is a teacher of music and plays the piano well. My mother always has a lot of work to do about the house and at school. She is a busy woman and we all help her.
My sister’s name is Alla. Like our mother Alla has blue eyes and fair hair. She is a very good-looking girl. Alla is three years younger than me. She is a pupil of the 8th form. She does well at school and gets only good and excellent marks. Literature is her favourite subject and she wants to become a teacher, as well as I do.
Our family is very united. We like to spend time together. In the evenings we watch TV, read books and newspapers, listen to music or just talk about the events of the day. Our parents don’t always agree with what we say, but they listen to our opinion.
All of us like to spend our weekends in the country. We often go to the village where our grandparents live. They are aged pensioners now, but prefer to live in the country. My grand-grandmother is still alive. She lives in my grandmother’s family and is always glad to see us. Her health is poor and she asks us to come and see her more often. I also have many other relatives: uncles, aunts, cousins. We are happy when we are together.

My name is Andrew. My family and I live in Yekaterinburg. We live in a nice flat in a modern block of flats. Our flat is on the third floor of the nine-storied building, which contains all modern facilities starting from central heating and ending with lift and rubbish chute. We have a cozy three-room flat. It consists of one bedroom for my parents, one large living-room and a study, which is also my room. Besides, there is a spacious kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet. The biggest room in our flat is the living-room. It has many useful functions. For example, we can watch TV there or have family dinners. At other times we welcome guests there and they can even stay overnight. We have a large sofa in the living-room, which can be transformed into a bed. My parents’ bedroom is also quite spacious. It’s a big room with two king size beds, two bedside tables, two lamps and a wardrobe. The study is not as big as other rooms in our flat, but despite this, it’s very cozy. There isn’t much furniture in it, only the most necessary things, such as a desk, a chair, a lamp, some book shelves, my bed and a cabinet. This room used to be my father’s study, but when I grew up it became my room. We don’t keep any pets in the flat, but there is a large aquarium in the hall where we have a lot of exotic and colourful fish. I like my flat very much. I think it’s a good place to live in. We are also lucky with neighbours.

I live in a comfortable city flat in a 9-stored block of flats not far from the centre of Samara. It is not a very green place, but still there are many trees around the house and in summer the yard looks very beautiful and cozy. The house is located comfortably because there a few supermarkets, pharmacies around and a cinema. My flat is on the fourth floor. It’s very comfortable and well-planned. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a balcony overlooking the yard. We have all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, cold and hot running water and a telephone. The largest room in our flat is the living room. My family uses it as a sitting room. There is a sofa, two armchairs, a small glass coffee table, a TV set on the wall and a DVD player in it. We use this room to meet the guests and to celebrate all holidays and important family occasions. Two other rooms are a bedroom of my parents and my bedroom. My room is rather small but it is very cozy. I like it so much, because this is my own place, my own corner. I have all the things that I need there – a soft bed at the right corner, a table near the window with a computer and a wardrobe near the wall. Our kitchen is not very large but it’s light. It’s very well-equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a microwave oven, an electric teapot, a coffee maker and a toaster and a lot of other household stuff. My mum likes cooking very much and in the evenings my family likes having dinner together in the kitchen – it’s our family tradition.

My name is Ann, I’m thirteen years old. I like all the seasons of the year, because each of them is wonderful in its own way. I live with my grandmother in the village in summer. It’s very beautiful there in summer: the tops of green trees glitter in the sunlight, the birds sing and the flowers smell nice in the street. We can eat fresh vegetables, fruits and berries in our village in summer. My friends and I ride a bicycle, swim in the river, bathe in the sun and have picnics. In autumn leaves fall from the trees and when I stroll through the park it seems to me that I walk on the beautiful motley carpet. I like to gather leaves of the different trees and to make a herbarium. In autumn my parents and I gather mushrooms in the forest. I miss school during the summer and meet autumn with joy because on the 1st of September the new school year begins. Although it’s cold in winter I like when my boots crunch loudly on the frozen snow. My parents and I make feeding-racks for birds and fill them with pet food every day. My friends and I often make the snowman, have a fight with snowballs, go skiing and skating. In winter everybody waits for New Year and at the end of December people decorate their houses and a big beautiful Christmas tree is put at the square. In spring the snow melts, the sun’s rays are already warm and the first flowers - snowdrops appear. In May everything begins to blossom, the green leaves appear on the trees, the birds fly back from the warm countries, and it’s warm and beautiful in the street. The school year ends and everybody waits for summer holidays. In spring my parents and I go to the country and help my grandmother to plant potatoes. We also make shashlik there. Spring is the time of love and a lot of people find their love at this season. I admire and enjoy each season of the year.

I am a pupil of the 9th form of a secondary school in Moscow. Our school gives general education. When at school, children study Russian, Russian literature, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and a foreign language. We also have classes in crafts for boys and home economics for girls, physical education, arts and music.The school is not a big one. On the ground floor, there is a gym, a cloak room, workshops for boys and a home economics room for girls, where they learn to cook, sew and knit. Besides, there is a lot of classrooms for younger children on the ground floor, there are classrooms for Maths, which have everything necessary for study.You can also find Physics and Chemistry labs and a room for Biology class there. They are very well-equipped and have all the devices and equipment for studying and making experiments in these subject fields. We also have two computer rooms. We have language laboratories in our school, too.English has always been my favorite subject. I enjoy making up dialogues, having small group discussions and even learning new phrases and grammar material. Unfortunately, my teacher says I’m not very good at communicating in English, though I can read, translate and retell texts quite well. But she also says I’m diligent and that if I try hard, my spoken language will soon improve.We have classes five days a week. Classes begin at half past 8 and last till 2 or 3 in the afternoon. When classes are over, I seldom go home right away. I’m a member at the chess society and the tennis club and often stay at school after classes to train. There are other clubs and societies at our school, too, like the drame club and the maths society, but i prefer these two.I like my class because I always feel at home with my classmates. We often spend our free time together. I enjoy my studies, too. I’m sure I’ll remember my schoolyears for the rest of my life.

Russia

Russia is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one seventh part of dry land. Its total area is over 17 million square kilometres. The country borders Finland and Norway in the north-west and China and Korea in the south-east. It"s washed by multiple seas and three oceans. There are different types of climate in the various regions of Russia. It is very cold in Yakutia even in summer. Central Russia has mild climate: winters are quite cold, springs and autumns are cool and wet, summers are hot. In Krasnodarsky Region the temperature is above zero all year round, even in winter. Summer is really hot there. In some locations the climate is subtropical. The climate of Siberia is continental: summers are hot and dry and winters are cold and windy. There are a lot of mountains in Russia. The oldest ones and very rich in minerals are the Urals. There are many rivers in Russia, the longest ones are Volga in Europe and Yenisei and Ob in Asia. The deepest lakes are Baikal and Ladoga. Baikal water once was purest in the world. Now environment protection organizations" leaders want it to be restored and kept safe and pure. They demand removing industrial enterprises out of its shore. Russian Federation is very rich in mineral resources such as oil, natural gas, coal, iron ore, gold and diamonds. Moscow is the capital of our country. It was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruky. It is a busy commercial and industrial Megapolis and a nice city at the same time. There are a lot of art galleries, theatres, museums and monuments in Moscow. The most famous historical place is Moscow Kremlin, where the President resides and works. People of Russia take proud of the Kremlin. There is also a great number of beautiful cities in Russia.

Look at a strong family and you are likely to find one with strong family traditions. Whether it is activities that the family always does, the everyday routines or ways they celebrate holidays and special occasions, these family rituals bring a sense of belonging, familiarity and routine to family members. In strong families, members become more committed to each other when they spend time together and create bonds. Traditions provide a sense of continuity, understanding, connectedness and love that strengthens family closeness. Family traditions are also opportunities for families to have “good times” and establish “good memories.” Rituals touch the hearts of family members in a positive way and help members feel good about themselves and each other.

Wayne Matthews, human development specialist with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, explains that family traditions help form the story line for a family’s unique history with each generation adding or deleting certain traditions that enhance the family story. Matthews shares other benefits of family traditions. Family Traditions:

Encourage family members to spend time together. Quality time together is necessary to build and maintain strong family relationships.

Allow members of the family to share the ups and downs of life, supporting one another when problems arise and celebrating the successes when they occur.

Help establish and communicate what is really important to a family and its members – its values, its belief system and its place in the larger world.

Provide a means of working out the family’s interpersonal dynamics, dealing with conflict, hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Provide a means of sharing love, laughter, loyalty, unity and a sense of commitment.

Traditions don’t have to be extravagant, intense or require a lot of planning. They can be as simple as reading to your child every night in the same comfy chair, having a movie and pizza night every Friday or discussing things you are grateful for around the dinner table each evening. Traditions are the glue that keeps a family together. We all have very busy lifestyles, and adding a small tradition here or there can make all the difference to your family. But what do you do if your family doesn’t have many traditions? Well, you create them of course! Somebody has to create all these little rituals, so why not let it be you?

There are some family tradition ideas to get you started:

The birthday hat. Get a hat that is well suited to your family and make this the “official birthday hat.” The idea is that each person wears it at their birthday dinner, whether that be at home or out in a restaurant. It can look like a cake complete with big felt candles out of the top. It’s ridiculously awesome.

Birthday cakes. Create the birthday boy or girl’s favorite type of cake. Is it cheesecake, devil’s food cake, or black forest cake? Or is it not even cake at all? Do they prefer pies, cookies, or cupcakes? Whatever it is, make their favorite treat an annual tradition for their birthday.

New job . When someone in your family gets a new job, a promotion, or a raise, create a tradition that they take you out for dinner. It doesn’t have to be a fancy or expensive dinner – you can go for pizza or wraps.

Christmas dainty exchange . Christmas can be a very stressful time, but baking all those Christmas goodies doesn’t have to add to it. Include as many or as few people as you want, and choose two to three items each to bake. Bake enough to share with everyone in your group and agree to a date when you’ll meet up and exchange the goodies you’ve all made. You get a huge variety of baked goods, and you don’t have to spend weeks preparing. Who doesn’t want that?

Saturday mornings in bed. Choose a morning on the weekend to spend in bed with your family. You don’t need to spend hours laying around, but 15 to 30 minutes is a nice length of time. Try having coffee, tea, or milk with a couple of cookies. Relaxing and taking a few minutes to connect with your family can be a great way to kick off a weekend.

Easter egg hunt . A classic in many households around the world. It is always a lot of fun and the morning would be full of laughter.

Potluck . This is a great way for extended family members to showcase their culinary talents. If you decide to do this monthly or bi-monthly, consider themes – make one night Mexican, and the next time Thai, followed by Italian. Theme nights can introduce you to a whole new world of cooking. Bring print-outs of the recipe so people can take it home with them.

Family Olympics . When the weather is nice, spend the day at the park, at the lake, or at the beach. Decide on sporting events for whole family – think bean bag toss, horseshoes, badminton, volleyball, and synchronized swimming. Create teams, or compete individually and have prizes for all participants.

Creating a feeling of unity, warmth and closeness with your family is priceless. There are no rules and there is no “right” way to do this. So take initiative, get creative, make it happen and most importantly have fun!
